Tell It to The Willow

Animal Kingdom is the best movie of the year so far. It definitely surpasses the qualities of my two favorite summer blockbusters — Inception (architecture and dreams), Day and Knight (locations and action) — because of its minimalist approach to story telling and suspense.

The movie centers on an Australian family enveloped in drugs and crime. All of the illegal dealings occur off screen so that the drama with the most impact is contained within the family. Of the family members, Uncle Pope, the scariest on screen villain since Anton Chigurh, and the pitiless matriarch manage to steal every scene.

Modestly, the movie clocks in at 90 minutes: the perfect length. I’ve come to resent any movie that lasts over two hours.
